The depression is situated on the edge of 'Townsend Common' (Plot 146).

The plot is depicted as plantation woodland.

An irregular shaped earthwork depression circa 70m by 30m is visible on images derived from lidar data captured in 2016. It does not correspond with any features depicted on historic maps. The depression is situated on the edge of a plot recorded as 'Townsend Common' in the Tithe Survey. The area is depicted as plantation woodland on subsequent maps. The depression is interpreted as an extractive pit of post-medieval to 19th century origin, that ceased extraction by the end of the 19th century.
