Name:Field system, Black Down

Summary

The fragmentary remains of an abandoned field system, lie beyond the present newtake near the moorgate in an area centred SX52758174. The redundant field walls, probably post-medieval origin, are of stone and earth and stand to a height of 1.1m. A large openwork cuts through the south part of the area (SX 58 SW 165). The fields are not depicted in 1882 (0S 1:10000 1882) as they were probably redundant then. Surveyed as part of the RCHME Willsworthy project.

(02/09/1998) The fragmentary remains of an abandoned field system, lie beyond the present newtake near the moorgate in an area centred SX52758174.
The redundant field walls, probably post-medieval origin, are of stone and earth and stand to a height of 1.1m. A large openwork cuts through the south part of the area (SX 58 SW 165). The fields are not depicted in 1882 (0S 1:10000 1882) as they were probably redundant then.

(23/02/2001) The fields cover an area of 0.8 ha and the boundaries are defined by well-preserved cornditches. Within the SE enclosure, that cut by the openwork, are traces of narrow ridge and furrow, 2.0m wide and a maximum of 0.2m high.
