HER Number:MDV131987
Name:Mounds on Standon Hill, Peter Tavy

Summary

Numerous amorphous mounds occur on the broad summit of Standon Hill in an area of deep peat centred at SX56048214. These mounds, on average 10m across and 1.2m high, are apparently composed entirely of peat and no surface stone is evident. The majority of the mounds, mostly in a group centred at SX55898193 are associated with the extensive peat cutting activity clearly visible on the eastern slopes of Standon Hill. These abandoned peat cuttings are marked by linear, marshy openworks on average 0.7m deep, which are separated by prominent baulks. At least three mounds occur on the boundary of the firing range and may have been used as markers before the present warning poles were erected. Identified as part of the RCHME Willsworthy project.
