Sims, R., Knight, S. & Houghton, E., 2020-2021, East Devon AONB Lidar Assessment and Desk based Assessment (Interpretation). SDV363914.

Numerous small approximately circular earthwork pits each between circa 2m and 7m across are visible beneath plantation woodland on images derived from lidar data captured in 2016. They are situated in vague clusters all across the woodland. Some of the pits have small mounds adjacent. They do not correspond with any features depicted on historic maps. The bedrock is reorded as sandstone of the Upper Greensand Formation. Several field names nearby are recorded as 'Little Stone Burrow' and 'Great Stone Burrow' in the Tithe Survey. Further pits are recorded also within woodland to the north (MDV131575). The pits are interpreted as extractive pits or prospecting pits of uncertain origin, some of which may have spoil heaps adjacent. Alternatively, they could be natural or geological features; more work is required to define their character and likely date.
