A narrow curvilinear ditch is visible as an earthwork on images derived from lidar data captured in 2016. The ditch closely follows the topographical contours of the south-west facing slope and does not correspond with any features depicted on historic maps. The ditch is interpreted as a gutter of a 19th to early 20th century catch meadow system. Catch meadows abstracted from springs or streams and redistributed it along channels or gutters to irrigate combe slopes rather than valley floors. Originating in the medieval period they were in widespread use in Devon in the 19th and early 20th centuries. In this particular case, it is not clear what water source the gutter is being fed from. A pond is visible to the west at West Colwell on the Tithe Map, and natural drainage is visible in the centre of the gutter, coming off the hill to the north. The gutter could be fed be either.
