HER Number:MDV132098
Name:Stone working evidence, Willsworthy Estate

Summary

Stone cutting and quarrying of the surface granite is indicated on many of the clitter-covered hillslopes on the Willsworthy Estate by wedge splitting and drill splitting marks. Also shallow amorphous depressions within this clitter areas mark the sites of lifted moorstones. In the centre at SX54638413 there is extensive evidence of drill split boulders and at SX5463584133 a broken iron drill or jumper bar survives from an unsuccessful attempt to split a boulder. Here two rows of four drill holes demonstrate how a granite pillar was being cut in situ. Investigated as part of the RCHME Willsworthy project in 1998 and by English Heritage in 2001.
