Name:Tinworking remains on right bank of the River Avon

Summary

Earthwork remains of medieval or later tinworks situated on the slope above the right bank of the River Avon, 250 metres north of its confluence with Heng Lake. The features were recorded during an archaeological field survey in 1996 and comprise a cluster of small, poorly preserved tin pits with diameters ranging from 3 metres to 5 metres and up to 0.6 metres deep. Low spoil heaps, disturbed by badgers and other burrowing animals, lie on their downslope margins.

Royal Commission for the Historical Monuments of England, 1993-1998, Dartmoor Royal Forest Project (Report - Survey). SDV346608.

(31/01/1996) Centred at SX65126738. A cluster of small poorly preserved tin pits lie on the gentle E-facing slope above the right bank of the River Avon some 250m N of its confluence with Heng Lake. The pits are all small with diameters in the range of 3.0m to 5.0m with depths of between 0.3m and 0.6m. Low spoil heaps, disturbed by badgers and other burrowing animals, lie on their downslope margins.
