Name:Leat on north slopes of Fox Tor

Summary

Earthworks of a medieval or later leat and tin pits situated on the north slopes of Fox Tor. An archaeological field survey in 1995 recorded the leat as extending over a distance of 1.1 kilometre. It was well preserved and survived as a channel 1.5 metres wide and 0.8 metres deep. The leat brought water from the upper reaches of the Swincombe to the Whealam streamworks. Several small tin pits were recorded immediately to the north of the leat.

(11/09/1995) A dry leat channel runs for some 1.1km on the north slopes of Fox Tor from SX 62976998 to SX 61866989. The leat is well preserved and measures, on average, 1.5m wide and 0.8m deep. It runs from the west edge of the Fox Tor streamworks towards the streamworks on the Whealam Stream. The leat apparently brought water from the upper reaches of the Swincombe to the Whealam streamworks (SX 66 NW 138). Several small tin pits lie immediately to the north of the leat, around SX 62006997.
