Full description

Royal Commission for the Historical Monuments of England, 1987-1993, Duchy Farms Project Survey Visit, S. Probert (Report - Survey). SDV350839.

(27/08/1992) SX 66627734 to SX 66037740. Two sections of hollow way ascend the eastern and western flanks of Riddon Ridge, south of the modern Postbridge to Widecombe road. The two sections, between SX 66627734 and SX 66457732, also SX 66087734 and SX 66037740 are flat bottomed and measure a maximum of 4.2m wide and 1.9m deep. They respect the boundaries of, and are therefore probably contemporary with, two areas of now abandoned fields (SX 67 NE 127 and 128). The latter contain ridge-and-furrow.
This route is probably the predecessor of the current Postbridge to Widecombe road.
These features were probably also used to channel water collected by the head dykes of the fields through which they passed. The water may have simply drained away at the foot of the slope or been fed into streamworkings flanking the Walla Brook.
For detailed 1:2500 plan see RCHME Riddon Ridge survey.
