The core of No. 14 and 16 Lime Street appear to form a 17th century or possibly older house or farmhouse. The building is shown on the 1790 Survey of the Manor of Moretonhampstead.
Lime Street was formerly known as St Mary’s Steps.
The building is later extended to the south and east. The east and southern extensions are not shown on the 1840 Tithe Map, the western range is shown. The buildings and land within the core of Moretonhampstead at the time of the Tithe are lettered. This building is lettered Z together with a field or garden to the south-east. Further investigation is needed into the associated details if the record survives.
Land to the east on which the eastern extension now sits was called Stooks Close (enclosure) owned by the Earl of Devon and occupied by Richard Hutchings at the time of the tithe. On the 1841 census Richard Hutchings, aged 65, is noted as farmer in Lime Street, it is likely that he was occupying the house which forms 14 and 16 Lime Street. At the time of the 1851 census, aged 76, he is noted as landowner.
The form of the original building, together with visible remnant features and the position of the openings (although most of the windows and doors are replaced) suggests that this was a cross-passage house, with room/s to either side.
The western range was built over three or four phases. The evidence from the north wall shows that there was a low stone wall (or the remains of a taller one), alternatively it is underbuilt at the time that access to Stooks Close changes perhaps before the 1st Edition OS Map. (The land is noted as allotments on the 1905/6 OS Map, which may explain the change.)
There is a second phase of stone walling atop this wall, it is likely to relate to the building at the time of the tithe (if it is not rebuilt). Later the block and cement render section raises the roof, and the space closet to the house becomes domestic space.
The southern extension was built by the time of the 1st Edition OS Map. an eastern building existent off this on 1932/39 OS Map which is possibly present on the 1947 Aerial Photograph, it has been removed by 2006 (possibly earlier) and the southern wing is either rebuilt or extended by 1999 aerial.
The east wing to No. 16 is constructed sometime between 1947 and 1999 aerial photographs. There appears to be an overhaul of the whole building, with new metal windows and blockwork in the mid-20th century (and certainly before 1976, prior to the planning records held at DNPA).
The high walls which split and bound the properties are also of significance.

Ordnance Survey, 2022, Mastermap 2022 (Cartographic). SDV364674.

Depicted on the modern mapping.
