HER Number:MDV132666
Name:Leat at East Birch Tor Mine

Summary

A leat which diverted water from the West Webburn for use on waterwheels and processing works at East Birch Tor Mine which is documented between 1836 and 1927. The source was from the spring just to the west of Headland Warren House and from there the channel leads onto a raised 50m-long, stone-faced launder embankment which terminates above the pumping wheelpit. A tailrace emerges 12m downstream where water was deposited back into the West Webburn. The stream continues SW passing under two small stone footbridges, before a second leat conveyed water from just north of the second footbridge, for a further 130m onto the launder embankment at the dressing floor. This supply was augmented by a short section of leat joining it from the east which diverted water from Grims Lake.
