Name:Openwork on steep eastern flank of Challacombe Down

Summary

Remains of a medieval or later tin openwork situated on the steep eastern flank of Challacombe Down, within Headland Warren. An archaeological field survey in 2001 recorded the openwork as comprising two adjacent parallel trenches, 223 metres long and up to 25 metres wide and 3 metres deep. The feature is undocumented but is likely to be circa 1450-1750 in date. A later, probable 19th century shaft is located in the floor of the working near the lower end.

Newman, P., 2002, Headland Warren and the Birch Tor and Vitifer Mines (Report - Survey). SDV363213.

(20/07/2001) Centred SX 6917 8086. A tin openwork which extends west to east on the steep eastern flank of Challacombe Down, within Headland Warren. The tinwork, consisting of two adjacent parallel trenches, which merge near the valley floor alluvial streamwork at the eastern end, is 223m long by up to 25m wide in total and 3m deep. It is undocumented but is likely to be post-medieval i.e. c. 1450-1750. A later, probable 19th-century shaft is located in the floor of the working near the lower end SX6920 8089.
