Name:Tinner's hut in area of streamworking on Steeperton Brook

Summary

A Medieval or later tinner's hut situated within an area of streamworking on the right bank of Steeperton Brook, 530m west of Wild Tor. Archaeological field surveys in 1993 and 2003 found the structure to be well preserved. It is rectangular on plan and measures 2.2m north to south by 1.7m internally. The walls comprise coursed boulder revetments up to 1.0m high on the north, west and south with a large upright block forming part of the eastern side. An entrance lies in the eastern wall near the northern corner: a single door jamb remains in situ.

(10/08/1993) SX 62348900. The remains of a small tinner's hut built into a bank of streamworking debris (SX 68 NW 84) on the right bank of the Steeperton Brook 530m west of Wild Tor. The rectangular hut is relatively well preserved and measures 2.2m north to south by 1.7m internally. The walls comprise coursed boulder revetments up to 1.0m high on the north, west and south with a large upright block forming part of the eastern side. An entrance lies in the eastern wall near the northern corner: a single door jamb remains in situ. The interior of the hut is partly obscured by fallen stone, no internal features are apparent.
