HER Number:MDV133397
Name:Leat in South Park Wood, Holne

Summary

Leat recorded during walkover survey in October 2005 associated with Holne Park Mine (later South Park Mine). A well defined leat that runs through the southern area of the wood; can be traced from its take off point on the small stream and along the hill contour northwards towards the area of mining remains. It cuts through the earlier field bank (MDV1333392) before deliberately running into a shaft (MDV1333396). The channel is 0.4m across and 0.4m deep. The lower bank is marked by a spoil heap. The purpose of the leat is unclear but is likely to relate to mining works.

The purpose of the leat is unclear but is likely to relate to mining works.
The leat is important in a local context and should be kept free of scrub and saplings. There should be no new planting either within the channels or on the leat bank.
