(Find undated) A postmedieval to modern copper alloy anthropomorphic pipe tamper. The figure depicted is a caricature of the 1st Duke of Wellington (1769 - 1852) wearing military attire. The base of the object is flat and circular, to facilitate pressing tobacco into a pipe. During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, many different types of novelty tampers were produced for general amusement.
