Full description

Royal Air Force, 1947, RAF/CPE/UK/1995, 3365-6, 4364-5 (Aerial Photograph). SDV224714.

Hut circle not visible, but its site lies within faint traces of an enclosure similar in shape and size to the enclosure immediately south-east of it (the larger of the enclosures in SX 68 SW 7).

Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division, 1951, SX68SW16 (Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division Card). SDV242838.

(22/06/1951) Hut circle listed and surveyed. Approx. diameter 3.0m. Height 0.3m.
(14/09/1951) "Although I was able to identify other antiquities in the neighbourhood with ease, I was unable to locate the hut circle reported by S S Reviser. Nothing seen in any way resembling a hut circle at this point or within a 50m radius".

National Monuments Record, 1977, SX6481/4, 257-263 (Aerial Photograph). SDV245149.

Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England, 1985, Aerial Photograph Project (Dartmoor) - Dartmoor Pre-NMP (Cartographic). SDV319854.

Enclosure visible on 1947 RAF and NMR 1977 aerial photographs, but not the hut circle.

Royal Commission for the Historical Monuments of England, 1987-1993, Duchy Farms Project Survey Visit, M. J. Fletcher (Report - Survey). SDV350839.

(07/09/1990) This site clearly is part of the extensive settlement/field system to the SE. (See SX 68 SW 7, site a, for details).

Gerrard, S., 1990-2002, Monument Protection Programme. Archaeological Item Dataset., MPP 148894 (Report - Survey). SDV277946.

(24/10/1997) At SX 64218167. Hut circle forming part of an enclosed stone hut circle settlement in Great Stannon Newtake.
Diameter 5.4m. Internal area 22.89m. Earthwork and single orthostat wall 2m wide, 0.3m high. Earthwork with occasional protruding stone.

Butler, J., 1991, Dartmoor Atlas of Antiquities: Volume Two - The North, 160, Map 35, Figure 35.4 (Monograph). SDV219155.

'White Ridge South-west 2' settlement is difficult to identify as all the banks are low, mostly less than 0.2 metres with only occasional orthostats standing above the turf. It appears to have been deliberately dismantled as long sections of bank are completely missing and more huts might be expected from the large area enclosed. Some loose stones lying roughly in circles on the eastern edge are probably the scant remains of a pair of Hut Circles '1' and '2', while most of the base course of Hut Circle '3' of 7.0 metres diameter lies in the centre of the enclosure

English Heritage, 2005-2008, Prehistoric Survey Information (Cartographic). SDV345521.

Features shown on survey.

Bluesky International Ltd/Getmapping PLC, 2015-2017, 2015-2017 Aerial Photographs (Aerial Photograph). SDV361462.

Features are partially visible on the aerial image, which is more accurate than the Royal Commission 1990 survey data in places.

Ordnance Survey, 2023, Mastermap 2023 (Cartographic). SDV365227.

'Enclosures & Hut Circles' shown on modern mapping.

Historic England, 2023, National Heritage List for England, 1018710 (National Heritage List for England). SDV365228.

The monument, which falls into seven areas, includes three agglomerated enclosures containing stone hut circles, a round cairn and part of the Stannon block field system lying on White Ridge within Great Stannon Newtake. The second agglomerated enclosure lies south of the first and includes at least five enclosed areas denoted by 1.2 metres wide and 0.3 metres high rubble walling. Two stone hut circles are linked to the enclosure walling and the remaining two huts are freestanding within the enclosed areas. The field system within the monument survives as four parallel reaves leading westward from a north to south terminal reave. The reaves forming the field system vary in character, but are generally composed of rubble walling measuring up to 2 metres wide and 0.5 metres high.
