Notification that having taken into account all the representations made and completed their assessment of the site, Historic England has decided not to add the walled garden, Singleton Gardens to the Register of Parks and Gardens.
The garden comprises an orchard and vegetable garden. There is also an early 18th century ice house. It is thought the garden was once the kitchen garden and orchard for Singleton, a villa built circa 1836. The villa and its grounds are shown on the 1854-1863 Ordnance Survey map. The walled garden comprised three sections with an orchard to the north, a central well, pathways and a glasshouse in the central section and further pathways and fruit trees in the southern section together with a structure in the south-western corner which is suggested to have been a gardener's cottage.
The gardens together with the cottage, which also became known as Singleton Gardens, were sold in 1945 becoming a separate property. The cottage has since been much altered and extended.
REASONS FOR DESIGNATION DECISION
The walled garden associated with the property known as Singleton Gardens, Torquay, Devon is not
recommended for inclusion on the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens for the following principal reasons:
Historic interest: the features of the walled garden are modest for this type of structure and gardens of the period and it does not survive as a notable example of a particularly important phase of garden development; Singleton and its walled garden contribute to an understanding of the early-C19 development of Torquay and the walled garden is recognised as being an uncommon survivor, however this is not sufficient to raise the level of interest to that required for national designation.
Degree of survival: the fabric of the walled garden has been significantly eroded by cumulative post-war changes and loss; the loss of the pathway layout within the walled garden and removal of the access from Singleton has reduced the understanding of the patterns of movement around the garden.

Historic England, 2023, Singleton Gardens, Meadfoot Sea Road, Wellswood, Torquay, Torbay TQ1 2LQ (List of Blds of Arch or Historic Interest). SDV365432.

Notification that Historic England have received an application to consider the walled garden known as Singleton Gardens for registration.
