Full description

Williams, H., 2007, Manor field, Stokenham, Devon. Interim report on the second fieldwork season, July 2006 (Report - Interim). SDV365435.

A second season of archaeological investigations was undertaken in Manor Field in July 2006, ahead of the extension of the churchyard.
The investigations in 2006 built on the results of 2005 and comprised the excavation of two trenches and two test pits and also included a number of research objectives, exploring the origins and development of the medieval church, manor and associated settlement, as well continuing the recording memorials and gravestones within the historic churchyard begun in 2005.
Trench 1 covered the entire area of the churchyard extension, including the area excavated in 2005. Trench 2 was located to the north of Trench 1, outside the area of the proposed extension.
The earliest feature recorded was a narrow ditch or gulley (1) running in south-west - north-east, in a straight line through the excavation areas, being picked up in Trench 2. A large sherd of pottery with a distinctive incised chevron pattern (521) was found face down within the Trench 2 section and another sherd with a cord decoration (546) was found close by, suggesting a Bronze Age date for the ditch.
