Full description

South West Heritage Trust, 1838-1848, Digitised Tithe Maps and Transcribed Apportionments, Plots (58,) 59, 62 (Cartographic). SDV359954.

The 1840s Tithe Map depicts two main buildings on this site (plots 59 and 62). 58 to the south is recorded on the apportionment as 'smith's shop' (58); see MDV114175. 58 and 59 are narrow rectangular adjoining buildings, aligned south-west by north-east. 59 is recorded as 'cottages'. 62 adjoins 59 at the northern end, but is set perpendicular to the main buildings. A larger roughly rectangular building 'house and garden', it is aligned almost east-west and forms the end building for the row.

By the time of the late 19th century historic map depiction, these buildings have been extended / altered into the layout that has been retained into modern times. Compared with the Tithe Map, the buildings are shown as substantially larger and appear to have been extended to the rear. The end property at the northern end has also been extended.

(Image dates 2009 - 2021) Buildings visible on the images show these were part of the Natwest Bank property in 2009 and 2011, but by 2016 the bank no longer hosted a branch here. The most recent image (2021) shows a grooming business in the end property (number 2), with the adjoining building (number 4?) apparently now a dwelling. Mixed windows, some replacements and signs of alterations. Tiled roofs, no chimneys.

The modern mapping shows a single building covering this plot but it appears to be the site numbers 2 and 4 The Square.
