HER Number:MDV134378
Name:1 and 3 The Square, Chagford

Pair of cottages date to at least the mid-late 19th century, based on cartographic evidence, but may have earlier origins. They occupy part of a larger building depicted on the 1840s Tithe Map; the current layout of buildings was established by the late 19th century historic map depiction when some replacement buildings were constructed in The Square to the south-west. These cottages may retain their original footprint as shown on the Tithe Map.

Cannon House (MDV114133 adjacent to this building) was at one time the Three Cannons pub. Victorian building in a block which was constructed to replace the series of dilapidated cottages and outbuildings that had gradually infilled the triangular part of the Square during the 17th and 18th centuries.

Google, 2023, Google Streetview (Website). SDV365229.

(Image dates 2009-2021) Numbers 1 and 3 are visible and appear to retain the footprint shown on the historic maps, although some alteration has taken place. Number 3 on the corner is unusually shaped to fit into the space available.

Ordnance Survey, 2023, Mastermap 2023 (Cartographic). SDV365227.

1 The Square is depicted on the modern mapping with the smaller 3 The Square adjoining to the south-east.
