Summary

Building dates to at least the mid-late 19th century, based on cartographic evidence, but may have earlier origins. It occupies part of a larger building depicted on the 1840s Tithe Map; the current layout of buildings was established by the late 19th century historic map depiction when some replacement buildings were constructed in The Square to the south-west. Ground floor shop (butchers) present. Unclear if any original features have been retained.

Full description

South West Heritage Trust, 1838-1848, Digitised Tithe Maps and Transcribed Apportionments, Plot 49 (Cartographic). SDV359954.

Depicted on the Tithe Map, this property occupies part of a large square building in Plot 49; 'Cottages', along with it's neighbour to the south-west.

The late 19th century historic map shows development / alterations of the buildings here in The Square and this structure may be a replacement building. It is shown sub-divided with a small L-shaped structure depicted.

This edition of the mapping is not as clear but may show an unchanged layout from the late 19th century historic map depiction.

Cannon House (MDV114133 adjacent to this building) was at one time the Three Cannons pub. Victorian building in a block which was constructed to replace the series of dilapidated cottages and outbuildings that had gradually infilled the triangular part of the Square during the 17th and 18th centuries.

(Image dates 2009-2021) Numbers 7 is visible as a three storey building with shop at ground level (occupied by A. L. Martin and Son's butchers throughout). Roof height is slightly lower than that of number 5 but dwarfs number 9 to the left. Replacement windows and other alterations likely.
