HER Number:MDV134496
Name:Ruined building on line of Princetown Branch

Summary

East-west aligned open-ended structure on higher side of the track bed. The structure is built mostly of coursed granite, although a few bricks were used in the southwest corner. The structure measures about 5.1m x 3.5m externally. The southern wall is 0.45m thick, whilst the northern wall (built into the moorland slope) is 0.9m thick. The eastern wall thickness is obscured by debris and the western end was open. There is a small 0.34m wide opening part way along the northern back wall. The opening measures at least 0.28m in height and at least 0.33m in depth. It appears to have been fitted with an iron lintel inside and had some sort of iron bracket or frame outside. Overall, the structure now stands to about 1.10m in height and its interior is almost entirely filled with rubble (presumably mostly granite). The structure does not appear on either the first or second edition 1:2500 OS maps (Devon sheet CVI.12), suggesting it may post-date 1904 (the year of the second edition revision).

The condition of the structure is very poor. The remaining pointing is decaying and the southeast corner is losing its form. The interior is filled with debris (most likely dating from its demolition) and small tied plastic carrier bags which have probably been left by dog walkers.
