Full description

Wakeham, C., 2016, Report on an Audit of Archaeological Features and Structures Relating to Railways and Tramways on Dartmoor Phase 1, DR+T_GWRP_020 (Report - Assessment). SDV360397.

Building (ruin) at SX 56535 73211. Granite and brick structure measuring 1.4m northeast-southwest and 1.06m northwest-southeast. The southeastern end of the structure is open to give an interior measuring 0.58m northwest-south x 0.61m northeast-southwest. It survives to a height of about 0.9m. A small piece of iron projects from the ground near the western corner of the opening. It may be the base of a chimney. Although there are no obvious remains of a larger structure on the site today (save a roughly rectangular hollow between feature and track bed), a building of about 3m x 6m is indicated on the second edition 1:2500 OS map CVI.11 (revised 1904). The building does not appear on the first edition OS map, suggesting the feature is the remnant of a chimney attached to the back wall of a small building - possibly a platelayers' hut or a passenger waiting room - erected between 1883 and 1904. The ruin is situated on the south side of the intersection between a cart track to/from Foggintor and the Plymouth and Dartmoor Railway track bed at King Tor Halt. There are also three strips of wood in the ground close by.
As a building, its condition is very poor (being an utter ruin). As a ruin, it appears to be in a relatively stable condition.

Ordnance Survey, 2023, Mastermap 2023 (Cartographic). SDV365227.
