HER Number:MDV134546
Name:Drain under railway trackbed, Walkhampton Common

Summary

Stone-lined and stone-faced (predominantly granite) drain running SSE-NNW under the Princetown Branch track bed. The interior of the drain is 0.61m wide and 0.68m high and has a rubble stone floor. At the lower end, the inner roof of the drain is over 1.3m below the surface of the railway track bed. The main, covered, section of the drain is c.5.2m in length. The masonry of the drain was bonded using a slightly grey-brownish white mortar. A stone with two 4cm diameter holes, c.9cm apart, has been reused in the masonry of the west wall, near the lower mouth of the drain. It is possibly a reused granite sett from the Plymouth and Dartmoor Railway. The drain has sloped abutments on all four corners. All but the easternmost on the higher (SSE) side are splayed. The lower wing walls extend for c.2.7m from the track bed and the higher ones extend c.1.8m. The wing walls are sloped for the most part. There is a 0.6m+ wide open channel/gutter both leading into and from the drain.

Drain at SX 55449 71325. Stone-lined and stone-faced (predominantly granite) drain running SSE-NNW under the Princetown Branch track bed. There is a 0.6m+ wide open channel/gutter both leading into and from the drain.
The interior of the drain is in relatively good condition, although the pointing is cracking up a little. The higher end is slightly obscured by encroaching bracken and gorse. The abutments on the lower side are in poor condition and have partially collapsed. The force of the flow of water through the drain has left the base of the lower gutter bare.
