HER Number:MDV134553
Name:Quarry excavation beside railway track bed, Walkhampton Common

Summary

Small quarry dug into the northwest-facing slope of the moor on the southeast side of the Princetown Branch track bed. It lies c.2m from the track bed and has been dug to a depth of c.1m. It is irregular in shape, but is c.8m northeast-southwest by c.5.5m, and has an uneven floor/base. A line of stones crosses the base, from northeast to southwest, about 2m back from the mouth of the quarry. It is possible that the line of stones represents the base of the Great Western Railway fence line.
