Name:Drain under railway trackbed, Walkhampton Common

Summary

Stone-lined and stone-faced (granite) drain running south-south-east by north-north-west under the Princetown Branch track bed. The interior of the drain is over 0.4m wide and 0.4m high (as measured at the end) and it is at least 6m in length. The higher (south-south-east) opening of the drain is located at the westernmost end of a drainage ditch/gutter which runs parallel to the track bed. There is a secondary, part-covered section of the drain c.1m to the north-north-west of the main drain. It is set at a slightly lower level and has a granite lintel to its lower face. A short section between it and the main drain is open/uncovered.

SX 54883 71077. Stone-lined and stone-faced (granite) drain running SSE-NNW under the Princetown Branch track bed. The interior of the drain is over 0.4m wide and 0.4m high (as measured at the end) and it is at least 6m in length. The higher (SSE) opening of the drain is located at the westernmost end of a drainage ditch/gutter which runs parallel to the track bed. There is a secondary, part-covered section of the drain c.1m to the NNW of the main drain. It is set at a slightly lower level and has a granite lintel to its lower face. A short section between it and the main drain is open/uncovered.
The drain is in a fair condition. The interior is in a good condition, although strewn with rubble and other material which has washed in. The higher opening is obscured and there is some disturbance at the lower end.
