Building (ruin) at SX 54552 70858. Remains of a small trackside building (probably a platelayers' hut) on the lower (west-north-west) side of the Great Western Railway track bed. The building remains comprise a north-north-east by south-south-west aligned concrete pad with brick chimney footings at the south-south-west end. The concrete floor remnants can now only be determined as measuring up to 2.9m (north-north-east by south-south-west) by 1.75m.
Observations of similar huts indicate this may have been in the region of 3.6m by 1.9m originally. There are traces of a rectangular hole in the concrete floor, along its east-south-east side. The traces measure 0.41m (north-north-east by south-south-west) by 0.19m. The length was probably more than double 0.41m and a west-north-west by east-south-east length of 1m is quite likely. This rectangular hole, typically 0.5-1m from one of the corners furthest from the fireplace, is a characteristic of several huts along the line: DR+T_GWRP_009, DR+T_GWRP_021, DR+T_GWRP_025 and DR+T_GWRP_034. The hole at the DR+T_GWRP_034 hut had wooden beams associated with it, perhaps suggesting it was part of an internal dividing wall. It is unclear what the outer walls of the building were composed of from physical evidence alone, but an iron and/or wooden superstructure is a possibility. The brick chimney measures 0.68m (north-north-east by south-south-west) x 0.92m externally, with projecting footings which increase the measurements to 0.74m and 1.09m (minimum) respectively. It survives to a height of 0.22m (being c.0.12m above the concrete floor surface). The building does not appear on either the first or second edition 1:2500 OS maps (Devon sheet CVI.11), suggesting it post-dates 1904 (the year of the second edition revision).
As a building, its condition is very poor (being an utter ruin). The concrete floor is cracked and is partly broken up. Grass and nettles are growing through the cracks.
