Full description

South West Heritage Trust, 1838-1848, Digitised Tithe Maps and Transcribed Apportionments (Cartographic). SDV359954.

The West Alvington tithe apportionment records Plot 155 as Startaberry Brake, Plot 155 as Stantaberry Field, Plot 154 as Waste in Stantaberry Brake. Fields with the 'Berry' element within the name may refer to earthworks nearby.

Environment Agency WMS, 2019, LiDAR DTM data (1m resolution), 2019 (Cartographic). SDV362956.

The LiDAR appears to show single or double ditch and bank within the woodland, with the north-west corner fossilised in the present field boundary. Boundaries on the West Alvington Tithe Map, coinciding with the LiDAR data, may record the east, west, north sides of the enclosure.

Horner, B., 2023, Trapezoidal Enclosure, Lower Sturtlebury Wood, Churchstow (Interpretation). SDV365790.

Possible trapezoidal enclosure visible on LiDAR at Lower Sturtlebury Wood, Churchstow. The LiDAR appears to show single or double ditch and bank within the woodland, with the north-west corner fossilised in the present field boundary. Boundaries on the West Alvington Tithe Map, coinciding with the LiDAR data, may record the east, west, north sides of the enclosure. The earthworks could be the layout of field boundaries relative to historic lanes, but ‘Sturtlebury’ is recorded on the modern mapping, and the Tithe Apportionment records ‘Startaberry Brake’ and ‘Stantaberry Field’.
