Site visited in November 1979. As well as the more obvious group of five circular settling tanks above Shipley car park, there are in the same some more ruinous ones, together with four rectangular pits against the western boundary of the area lying one above the other on the slope of the hill. The area has noticeable white clay deposits under the turf around them. The square pits are built into the hillside and have no definite stone walling showing, neither does the circular pit (e) or the pit (f) which may have originally been circular.

Pits 1-3 are aligned descending the hillslope and separated the sands and mica from the kaolin during the 1950s. Pits 1 and 2 consist of rectangular depressions each covering an area of circa 180 square metres with a substantial earthwork retaining bank. Pit 1 is 0.5 metres deep and Pit 2 is 0.7 metres deep. Pit 3 is is longer and narrower with a maximum depth of 0.2 metres. All three pits have vestiges of a granite lining. Map object partly based on this source.
