Name: | King's Leat to south of Bradford Farm, Tiverton |
---|
Summary
Remains of a leat to the south of Bradford Farm. A nearby field is named as King's Leat on the 19th century Tithe Apportionment. The function of the leat is not clear but it appears to take water from the Lowman and return it further downstream suggesting that it supplied a mill somewhere in this area although no trace of this can be found.

Field 3176 is named as King's Leat on the Tidcombe Tithe Apportionment.
Balkwill, C. J., 1976, North Devon Link Road, No. 6 (Report - Survey). SDV51639.
Substantial mill leat, now filled in, which runs for several hundred metres around the side of a hill, west and south of Bradford Farm. An adjacent field bears the name King's Leat. The function of the leat is not clear but it appears to take water from the Lowman and return it further downstream suggesting that it supplied a mill somewhere in this area although no trace of this can be found.
Unknown, 1976, Untitled Source (Unattributed Sites and Monuments Register Entry). SDV342614.
Mill leat on south side of Bradford Farm. Substantial earthwork; filled in. Referred to on the Tidecombe-Tiverton Tithe Map of circa 1840 as a field name (Kings Leat). Appears to run downhill from Bradford Farm and to drain into a secondary channel. Slight traces of earthworks north of and uphill from the leat. Adjacent to the road and opposite Bradford Farm.
King, A. C., 1979, Untitled Source (Worksheet). SDV342615.
King's Leat as field name on 1844 Tithe Map (TA 3176). The map does not indicate the presence of the leat but its course is shown by a field boundary.
Doggett, N., 1982, NDLR1 Card Index, F.18 (Archive - Survey). SDV56213.
The leat is not cut by the line of the North Devon Link Road but its course can be seen to the north curving round to SS99352418. Probably earlier than the mid 19th century as the Tithe Map suggests that it had gone out of use by then.
Doggett, N., 1983, The North Devon Link Road (Stage One). Sampford Peverell to Tiverton, F.18 (Un-published). SDV363254.
The leat can be clearly seen in the field to the north of the North Devon Link Road although its course becomes difficult to follow before it meets the road. An adjacent field bears the name, King's Leat on the Tithe Map. However, it is not marked as a leat, merely shown as a field boundary. This suggests that it may have fallen into disuse by this time.
