The area immediately around okehampton parish church is said by beresford and hoskins to be the original site of the saxon settlement of okehampton, deserted for the present site in 11th century. No earthworks are visible here, and nothing shows on aps (os).

The Saxon settlement has been located traditionally in the vicinity of the parish church, an example of a Saxon hill top settlement with subsequent in the medieval period to the valley. However, there is no evidence to support this and parish churches in isolation from their settlements are not uncommon in Devon.
