Foundry House was built as the captain’s house of an iron and brass foundry connected to Wheal Maria . The foundry was built on the site of earlier (1840s) copper grinders, which were powered by water stored in reservoirs above the site to the east. Foundry House was built abutting the massive retaining wall which supported these reservoirs, this wall surviving as the eastern boundary of the current house’s garden. The construction of the foundry was accompanied by enlargement and reconfiguration of the complex of reservoirs above the site in order to power an enlarged water wheel. The foundry was closed in the early 20th century, with all buildings apart from Foundry House and the retaining wall demolished, although historic aerial photography and mapping shows that a later industrial complex existed between the foundry and house within the current garden area. During this period a linear extension to Foundry House is shown on these documents, perpendicular to the main elevation. Mapping and structural evidence indicates comprehensive rebuilding and renovation of Foundry House during the late 20th century, resulting in the demolition of the southern projecting range, extension at first floor level to the rear and north east, extension to the south west of the property in the form of a modern porch, and to its north west by the construction of a very large double garage and games-room.
