Full description

Buck, C., 2006, Gawton Mine, Devon: Archaeological Assessment, 48 (Report - Assessment). SDV344672.

A Furnace House (built in 1895) is located at SX 45202 68899. The arsenic furnace house was mostly demolished in the late 1940s, leaving the site as a large area of bricks and wall remnants. Fencing this site from the adjacent track into Gawton Quay appears to be the only long term management solution. Other details: Site No. 45.3.

Clive Meaton, 2023, Gawton Mine, Devon- Costed and Prioritised Proposals for Capital Works for the Conservation and Management of Gawton Mine Scheduled Monument (Redacted Costs Version), 110, Figure No.7 (Report - Survey). SDV366131.

A Furnace House was constructed circa 1895 at SX 45202 68899 and seems to have housed the reverberatory furnaces, which first processed material from the Oxland Calciner (Site No. 44), and then the Brunton Calciners (Site No. 43). The Furnace House appears to have been built over the site of the original Arsenic Refinery (Site No. 45). The arsenic Furnace House was mostly demolished in the late 1940s, with the site left as a large area of ground level bricks and wall remnants. The location of the Furnace House is based on the Site Plan Figure No. 7. Other details: Site No. 45.3.
