Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1904 - 1906, Second Edition Ordnance Survey 25 inch Map (Cartographic). SDV325644.

The buildings are depicted.

Buck, C., 2006, Gawton Mine, Devon: Archaeological Assessment, 50, Figures 7 and 11 (Report - Assessment). SDV344672.

The Stores are located at SX 45071 68885. The survey map of 1867 shows these buildings in detail. A view of the site in circa 1911 shows these two northern buildings (single storied), as being hip roofed with slate, and a wide opening between each of the two buildings. These buildings appear to have changed very little in form from the early decades of the 19th century. This building was presumably being used for storage of the many types of products traded by a quay of this type. Other details: Site No. 49.

Clive Meaton, 2023, Gawton Mine, Devon- Costed and Prioritised Proposals for Capital Works for the Conservation and Management of Gawton Mine Scheduled Monument (Redacted Costs Version), 125-126, Photograph 64 and 65 (Report - Survey). SDV366131.

The Stores at Gawton Mine are located at SX 45071 68885. The photograph of circa 1911 shows two northern, single storied buildings with hipped roofs, a slate covering, and a wide opening between the two. The building's form appeared to have altered little during the 19th century development of the mine. In 2006 the walls of these buildings were not found to survive within the original walled compound, although six vertical columns that would have supported their roofs on the east and west sides respectively, were upstanding. It was recommended that the columns were surveyed to assess their structural competency.
As in 2006, no walls of the Stores were found to survive. In addition, three of the six vertical columns previously recorded were no longer upstanding having presumably collapsed in the intervening period. Low mounds of vegetation covered rubble marked their former location. The three surviving pillars also appeared to be in deteriorating condition, with open jointed stonework, localised voids and loose masonry. The northern most pillar was leaning to the east and the south pillar was leaning to the west. The stone pillars were assessed to be in poor condition and deteriorating. The surviving structural remains of the Stores are an integral part of the overall complex and will contain important historical and evidential value spanning a long period of use, from the early 19th century through to the main arsenic producing years. he Stores are considered to be of high significance relative to other features and structures across the Site. Vegetation management, structural repairs and regular monitoring should be undertaken. Other details: Site No. 49.

Jon Avent, 2023, Gawton Mines, Gulworthy, Devon- Structural Condition Report, 24-25 (Report - Survey). SDV366140.

Walls are reasonably stable but vegetation present restricting access for detailed assessment. Other details: Site No. 49.

Ordnance Survey, 2024, Mastermap 2024 (Cartographic). SDV365834.

The northern extent of the Stores is depicted.
