Full description

Unattributed, 2021, Restoring Stover Park. Archaeological Surveys. Lidar Assessment, Area 6-7 (Report - non-specific). SDV366261.

To the south of Area 6, pits and banks may be the remains of former quarries. Alternatively, they could be the site of spring-heads rising here and flowing downslope to the north-east.

Passmore, A. + Rainbird, P., 2021, Restoring Stover Park. Report on Archaeological Surveys., 13; Figs 7-9; Plates 11-15; Appendix 1 (Report - Survey). SDV366260.

Walkover survey identified an area of pits and banks which may be the remains of former quarries. Alternatively, they could be the site of spring-heads rising here and flowing downslope to the north-east. This feature is located on a broadly north-facing slope above the floodplain of the Ventiford Brook, and some of the hollows appear to represent natural dry coombes separated by spurs of slightly higher ground (as recorded in less detail by the contour line on the Ordnance Survey Second Edition 6-inch map of 1906). Some of the earthworks are clearly man-made hollows and include what appear to be hand-dug extraction pits and machine excavated pits (accessed from the main track through the woodland). They have the character of quarrying for clay or gravel (as for example recorded in the china clay spoil heaps at Hemerdon).
