Full description

Environment Agency, 2021, University of Exeter Understanding Landscapes Project - Lidar visualisation (Cartographic). SDV366001.

An enclosure is visible as an earthwork.

Hegarty, C., 2025, Comment on Unlocking Landscapes project and related lidar and aerial photograph interpretations (Interpretation). SDV366411.

An enclosure is visible on images derived from lidar data as an earthwork under the tree cover of Smythapark Wood, Loxhore. A curvilinear bank and external ditch, up to 9m and 6m wide respectively, enclose an irregularly shaped area over 90m long and nearly 50m wide, on the tip of a south-east facing spur overlooking the valley immediately to the south-east. The bank and ditch are less week defined on the south-eastern side, where the defences may have employed or enhanced the steep natural topography. No evidence of an entrance is visible and no internal features can be seen.
The enclosure is less than 170m south-east of slightly smaller oval enclosure MDV12053, part of possible promontory hillfort MDV1958.

Horner, B., 2025, Lidar interpretation (Personal Comment). SDV366415.

An earthwork enclosure on promontory, south of Smytha Park Hillfort.
