A programme of archaeological work was undertaken along the route of a 13.5km long water main from Roborough to Yondertown. A previous geophysical survey had identified a number of areas likely to contain archaeological deposits.
A large pit [1631] was recorded in Area G3. This was shown on excavation to be a series of recut features. It was originally a large, shallow circular pit which was subsequently cut by a circular, vertical shaft 0.9m diameter and in excess of 1.15m deep. It is possible that this was a medieval or post-medieval prospecting pit for minerals. However, it also bears comparison with prehistoric pits that show evidence of use and reuse.
