Robinson, R., Untitled Source (Report - Survey). SDV137185.

Vis=estimated -/-/1979 (robinson, r. ). Quarry, kerswell. Slate. Referred to in 1580. Tithe map no.4561. Field 4570 seems the most likely candidate as it is the only one known to have a quarry in or adjacent to it. This field has a quarry at one corner opening on to the road between kerswell and lincombe, of a considerable size. There is no other documentary evidence about this quarry.

An irregularly shaped pit is visible as an earthwork.

An irregularly shaped pit, circa 52m long by 27m wide, is visible as an earthwork on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2019. The earthwork corresponds with land parcel 4561 on the mid-19th century Parish Tithe Map, which is recorded as ‘Quarry by Road’ on the accompanying Tithe Apportionment. This supports the interpretation that the earthwork represents a post-medieval or early 19th century quarry which had likely passed out of use by the mid to late 19th century. The earthwork is not clearly visible on other available aerial imagery owing to thick tree cover.
