Full description

Child, P., 2000, Countryside Stewardship: Upcott Barton, Beaford (Correspondence). SDV366739.

Behind the farmhouse is a courtyard with a cider house forming the north range. It still contains a cider press with twin metal screws. This is of a traditional type but is not of great antiquity. The original function of the building is unclear but it was probably not for cider making as it appears that part of the floor has been removed in order to insert the press. The style of roof indicates an 18th century date. The walls are of cob and stone and the roof is clad with slates.
Adjoining the cider house is a double-sided single storey shelter shed supported on stone pillars. Single storey cattle shelters are unusual in Devon and this one is particularly interesting as it is double sided.
