(14/11/1980) Open mine adit in King's Wood. Part of King's Wood Mine (see Dines, 1956, p.740). A short distance uphill from the open adit is a blocked trial adit with a small spoilheap.

KW30 - Mine Adit (SX 7132 6648)
1.5m high by 1m wide portal. There is no sign of spoil heaps associated with this adit but there is a track running east from the adit. This may have continued westwards as far as the adit at SX 7098 6649 but has since been eroded by the stream which runs in front of the adit.
The eastern adit was started in 1918 and driven northwards. At 27 fathoms (1 fathom = 1.829 metre) a copper lode was intersected and worked and 21 fathoms beyond this a second lode of copper and zinc blende with a pocket of pitch blende was discovered (Hamilton Jenkin, 1981).

Richardson, P. H. G., 1992, The Mines of Dartmoor and the Tamar Valley after 1913, 134 (Article in Serial). SDV323598.

Prospected 1918-20 when an adit was driven from beside the stream and the presence of pitchblende reported. In 1949 a newspaper report said it was to be developed as a model mine where geologists could be trained in the detection of radioactive minerals. A similar report in 1967 brought the matter to notice again, this time in connection with radon. The adit was still open in 1980 but should not be entered on account of high levels of radioactivity.

Environment Agency WMS, 2021, Environment Agency LIDAR Composite DTM 2020 - 1m (Cartographic). SDV364513.

Visible on lidar data.
