Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

Milestone is depicted on the late 19th century historic map; 'M.S. Ashburton…7'.

Robinson, R., 1977-1979, South Brent Parish Checklist Worksheets, Page 627-8 of 821 (Worksheet). SDV340722.

Milestone, opposite Stidston. Extant. Granite.
2/12/1978 A granite milestone on the north side of the old A38 road (now B3010) opposite Homer Stidston on the right of the field gateway.
It is carefully dressed, flat faced with a rounded top. Height 0.58 metres, width 0.38 metres, thickness 0.22 metres. The stone has been whitewashed, a few traces remaining and the letters picked out in black. The back is against the bank and cannot be seen but by tough there is no lettering on it. On the front (facing traffic from the west) is 'Ashburton 7'. The figure '7' is almost indecipherable.
This stone relates to the Plymouth-Exeter Turnpike, the section between Brent Bridge and Chudleigh Bridge being administered by the Ashburton Turnpike Trust who in 1834 published plans for a re-shaping of the route from Brent Bridge to Dean Prior bypassing Harbourneford and the line of the 1755 turnpike completely. This gives a date of 1834 for this milestone. If however it was moved from the site of the '7 mile stone' on the old route of 1755 it could date from this time but it does not match in style or materials the 1755 milestone of Brent Bridge.

Ordnance Survey, 2015, MasterMap (Cartographic). SDV357601.

Milestone is still depicted on the modern mapping.
