Granite milestone at Marley Head where the road from Totnes via Dartington joins the line of the A38, and the line of the 1834 Exeter-Plymouth turnpike road. It is situated to the north of the field gate just south of the old lodge to Marley House, immediately adjacent to the small roundabout at the south end of the flyover for the A38 dual carriageway. A triangular dressed granite stone 50cm high, 30cm wide, flat topped, whitewashed at sometime and the letters picked out in black. Inscribed '6 Miles to Totnes', on the north face and '17 Miles to Plymouth' on the south face.
Jenkinson, T., 2003 - 2008, A385 South Brent to Paignton (Report - Survey). SDV324084.
Site visit 5th November 2003. Milestone at Marley South on the grass verge near to the roads to South Brent and Totnes. Dates from the circa 1820s. Inscribed '6/Mile/to/Totnes/17/Miles/to/Ply/Mouth'. Chipped front edge. The milestones along the A385, South Brent to Paignton, were placed by the Totnes Turnpike Trust at varying times during the 18th and 19th centuries. The markers running from South Brent to Totnes are unusually small, triangular stones, which are difficult to espy. From Totnes the style of the stones changes to a more sturdy marker showing distances to Torbay's three towns. Several of the milestones are now missing.
