Full description
Unknown, 1981, Unknown, 63 (Article in Serial). SDV362531.
A bronze palstave was found by Mr C. Willis on the Approach Golf Course in February 1980. It was found within an area of rough grassland, circa 15-17 centimetres below the ground, about 150 metres from the cliff edge. The palstave has been examined by S.M. Pearce, who considers it to be an early example of a southwestern Middle Bronze Age shield pattern type, dated circa 1450-1400 BC, similar to those known from Dartmoor. Length 14.2 centimetres, width 6.0 centimetres. Donated to Torquay Museum.
Pearce, S. M., 1983, The Bronze Age Metalwork of South Western Britain, 435 (Monograph). SDV341822.
Pearce describes a palstave, which could be that found by C. Willis, with a wide blade, side knobs at the junction of the haft and blade, and a 'v' depression on both faces.
Length 162 millimetres, blade width 66 millimetres, butt width 24 millimetres. Early shield pattern.
Berridge with drawing by Read, P., 1986, Palstave (Worksheet). SDV318412.
