Full description

National Monument Record, SX99SE27 (National Monuments Record Database). SDV105607.

The name Mill Down is recorded in 1620. It probably refers to the down above the mill, presumably not a windmill (citing TDA).
Site visit 9th Novmber 1982 by Ordance Survey Archaeology Divison. Nothing visible on top of the hill. As a watermill existed fairly close to the hill, the TDA cited above is probably correct.

South West Heritage Trust, 1838-1848, Digitised Tithe Maps and Transcribed Apportionments (Cartographic). SDV359954.

Field No. 277 is named as Mill Down on the Sowton Tithe Apportionment.

Alcock, N. W., 1975, Fields and Farms in an East Devon Parish, 169 (Article in Serial). SDV130126.

The field name, Mill Down is recorded in 1620. Alcock suggests that this does not refer to a windmill, although the site is suitable, but rather is the down above the mill.

Minchinton, W., 1977, Windmills of Devon, 50 (Monograph). SDV12997.

Site of a possible windmill. 'Mill Down' is marked on the 1932 6 inch Ordnance Survey Map.

Watts, S., 2022, Windmill on Mill Down (Personal Comment). SDV365144.

Although the name may reference Clyst Mill, it is possible that a windmill once stood here. Alcock states that the site is suitable. It was not unusual to have the both within the same parish. Upstream from Bishop's Clyst, Broadclyst has both a water and a windmill, although the windmill here was not built until the 19th century.
