Full description
Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division, SS80SW24 (Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division Card). SDV40425.
A turn pike gate is marked on the 1809 1 inch Ordnance Survey map at Barnstaple Cross.
Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.
A small building on the north side of the road junction is marked as a toll-gate.
Sheldon, L., 1933, Devon Toll-Houses, 303 (Article in Serial). SDV341560.
It was still in existence in October, 1871 when a ticket was issued at it by the Exeter Turnpike Trust .
Lowe, M. C., 1992, Toll houses of the Exeter Turnpike Trust, 89 (Article in Serial). SDV40109.
Site of a toll house at the junction of roads from Bow, Copplestone, Crediton and Tiverton. It was built in 1769 and sold in 1884 following which it was demolished. It is shown on the 1888 Ordnance Survey map but not on the 1905 edition.
