Late 17th century pipe kiln found during construction of by-pass in 1971 (cherry). Sx846772. Watching brief prior to by-pass construction. Scatter of broken clay pipe fragments covering an area 20m across, representing a clay pipe waster dump. About 500 pipe fragments recovered. Actual place of manufacture just n of excavated area. Pipes all of west country origin (miles).
