Full description

Evidence for early medieval occupation was found during excavations in 1976. The Roman bath house was apparently demolished in the early 4th century. In the brown soil which had accumulated over the building debris were two areas blackened by charcoal which produced early medieval pottery, dated to the 11th or 12th century. These were located near the stubbs of the bath house walls which appeared to have been projecting through the surface at this time. A small hearth of reused Roman tile fragments was associated with these features. The hearths suggests possible timber buildings. A flat-bottomed ditch running east-west down the hillsides through the extreme north end of the bath house also produced medieval pottery. The early medieval activity was possibly associated with the strip fields apparent on the Tithe Map.
