Bake-house at rear of no 5, West Exe North, recently excavated following demolition. Foundation wall of baker's cottage found, also of oven and its chimney. Also evidence of more than one phase of building, although pottery finds did not make dating possible. Iron and slag deposits suggest adjoining site of smithy. Earliest dating for settlement of site provisionally given as 16th century. Building probably damaged in fire of 1785.
