Full description
WILKINS ET AL, Untitled Source (Migrated Record). SDV120186.
Decorated bronze mirror. Found at the bottom of a pit, inside the "ia" enclosure (see sy39sw/8/1) and underlying the later villa building. Possibly originally wrapped in a cloth.(pollard). Context now considered to be post-conquest (silvester). The mirror is 37.2cms long from rim to handle, 26cms wide, and 800g weight. It has a multi- loop design, and is thought to have been produced by a western school of metal-smiths active in first half of 1st century ad.(fox + pollard). Fox refers to the double lyre design of the engraving and compares the mirror with the examples found at mount batten, plymouth (sx45se/7) (fox, 1972). The designs on the holcombe mirror are discussed and shown to have been made with compasses (wilkins et al).
