HER Number:MDV14627
Name:Vermin trap at Hentor Warren

Summary

Original source recorder of this trap (Haynes, 1970) used an inaccurate grid reference but trap has been surveyed in 1995, and recorded in 2002 and 2015. Vermin trap built against the s side of a post-medieval field wall, forming part of Hentor Warren. Includes two lengths of rubble walling, together forming a V-shaped trap pointing towards the base of a field wall. The trap walls average 1m wide by 0.2m high, the western arm is 11m long and the eastern arm is 9m long. The trapping area lies between the arms of the trap and the boundary wall, from which construction stone was presumably robbed.

Full description

Haynes, R. G., 1970, Vermin Traps and Rabbit Warrens on Dartmoor, 160, No. 5, fig 49c (Article in Serial). SDV166302.

Hentor Warren (SX 5880 6525). Haynes' vermin trap No.5. On right bank, Upper Hentor Brook; built against the corner of a tinner's wall which here turns at right angles and continues irregularly to Hentor enclosures.
NB: Note that Haynes grid reference in this instance is inaccurate and records this trap as lying 200m upstream (and on the wrong side of the brook). Previous HER record based on this inaccuracy has been removed (Richards, A. F., 06/03/2020).

Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England, 1985, Aerial Photograph Project (Dartmoor) - Dartmoor Pre-NMP (Cartographic). SDV319854.

Not visible on 1946 Royal Air Force vertical aerial photographs.

(11/04/1995) SX 5869 6541.
NB: in Dat-34 (disk in SMR), Gerrard references his 140425 to SX56NE/249 - which has a recorded grid reference of SX 5880 6530. However, his Upper Plym Valley progress report (1996) states that the latter was not seen.

Probert, S. A. J. + Fletcher, M. J., 2002, Plym Valley survey (Report - Survey). SDV350782.

(13/05/2002) Not mentioned as one of the four traps within Hentor Warren, but is marked on the GIS layer based on English Heritage's surveys of the area.

Ridgers, H. + Ridgers, C., 2015, Of Varments and Vermin Traps, 7, no. 83 (Report - Assessment). SDV358632.

SX 58692 65421. Authors note that Haynes' grid reference is very inaccurate here. Trap is quite obvious on bank, below the right angle perimeter of the wall. One wall of trap measures 3m; other wall is less clear.
